WELSTAAT

In September 2018, the Kameroperahuis in Frederiksoord will present the music-theatre experience 'Welstaat' a total of ten times. Welstaat is a theatre piece in which connections are established between the utopian conception of the past - the exaltation of the poor - and today, where poverty is still widely prominent. Johannes van den Bosch founded the first Free Colony in 1818: Frederiksoord. Willemsoord and Wilhelminaoord followed soon after. Three oorden (towns) where many poor families from the rest of the Netherlands could build a new life.

As a visitor, an estranging, magical-realistic experience awaits. After passing through the 'gateway' in Frederiksoord, you enter the fictional town of Welstaat as a newcomer. A strange new town, in which the landscape forms the backdrop and where fiction and reality seems to merge seamlessly. Visit visual, musical places and memorable characters during a kind of fox hunt crossing fields and roads. The different story lines and characters all come together when the experience finally comes to a close.

For two weeks the Kameroperahuis, led by director Pepijn Cladder, writer Sara van Gennip and composer Stan Verberkt, transforms the Colonies of Humanitarianism to Welstaat: town of connectedness and solidarity.
