Leeuwarden: European Capital of Culture 2018

The biggest event in the history of Friesland and Leeuwarden will take place in 2018 when the region is presented to Europe. More than forty major cultural events will take place during 2018 across the province of Friesland and the Wadden Sea area. The heart of these exciting international events for both young and old alike will be the city centre of Leeuwarden.

Get a feel for the atmosphere of Europe’s Capital of Culture 2018 during one the great events already being organised. Come and see the finest and friendliest village in the Netherlands during Leeuwarden’s very own festival, ‘Welcome to The Village’, or experience the musical Easter story, ‘The Passion’. You can even step into the world of the famous spy Mata Hari in the Fries Museum.

2016 kicked off with the magnificent exhibition on the painter Alma-Tadema in the Fries Museum, which has already welcomed 158,000 visitors.
