In 2018, we showed the world how we Frisians celebrate life. We stuck our heads above the parapet and dared to show the world how we go our own unique way. Our landscape was the stage and everyone was invited.
Frisian dreams and solutions
Leeuwarden – Fryslân 2018 was about finding one another while the world around us develops at a staggering speed. It was about a wilful and involved community that values each other’s ideas, possibilities, and challenges. The adventure of this year was meant for everyone, no matter your background.
Leeuwarden and Friesland
The events did not only take place in Leeuwarden, the historical capital of a hundred names, but also in the wild versatile landscape. From the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea to the eleven cities, some of which are smaller than our villages. Our landscape formed the stage and everyone was invited.
Leeuwarden – Friesland 2018 has been awarded with the title of European Capital of Culture 2018 based on a so-called ‘bidbook’. In this book, we present our ideas. It is our contract with the residents of Leeuwarden and Friesland, with the governments, and with the European Commission that awarded the title. Realising the bid book’s ideas was a new journey for all. This is why the plan served as our guideline in what we did and did not do.
