In 2018, we’re going to show how we Frisians celebrate life. We’re going to stick our heads above the parapet and dare to show the world how we go our own unique way. Our landscape is the stage and everyone is invited. Bring along your swimsuits, pack your boots, put on your hat and grab your sunglasses. What we’re going to do is a surprise and will captivate you. But that doesn’t matter because once in Friesland you won’t want to go home.
Frisian dreams and solutions
Leeuwarden – Fryslân is about finding one another while the world around us develops at a staggering speed. It is about a wilful and involved community that values each other’s ideas, possibilities, and challenges. The adventure of 2018 is meant for everyone, no matter your background.
Leeuwarden and Friesland
The events take place not only in Leeuwarden, the historical capital of a hundred names, but also in the wild versatile landscape. From the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea to the eleven cities, some of which are smaller than our villages. Our landscape forms the stage and everyone is invited.
Leeuwarden – Fryslân 2018 has been awarded with the title of European Capital of Culture 2018 based on a so-called ‘bid book’. In this book, we present our ideas. It is our contract with the residents of Leeuwarden and Fryslân, with the governments, and with the European Commission that awarded the title. Realising the bid book’s ideas is a new journey for all. This is why the plan serves as our guideline in what to do and what not to.
Looking towards the future in the year 2018
With the 2018 program we want to work hard together and work on issues that deserve our attention. Think of clean drinking water, the multi-cultural society, sustainable innovations, and poverty reduction.
