Leeuwarden Free Tour

EVERY Friday and Saturday! Join the local guides of A Guide to Leeuwarden. They know the city’s hidden places and love to tell about her history, but they also know where to find the best shops and the nicest graffiti. Of course, they also know where to go for a good meal or drink once the tour is over. On FRIDAY, the tour starts at 15:00 and its theme is Friesland. We tell you all about the Frisian language, Oranjekoek, the Elfstedentocht, and we visit the beautiful Statenzaal! On SATURDAY, the tour starts at 12:00. We tell you about the name Leeuwarden, Mata Hari, our royal family, and we visit an old theatre! START: We start at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof*. We will walk a different route depending on the day and so will discover different hidden places. The Free tour is in Dutch. We will start having English groups on Saturdays! FREE TOUR? You do not need to pay anything upfront, but it is possible to tip the guide at the end of the tour. Our guides will try to entertain you to the best of their abilities and you will be able to pay them according to your experience! You do not need to sign up but we appreciate it if you do. Street Art Tour

Join an enthusiastic A Guide to Leeuwarden guide and get to know Leeuwarden by its Street Art. This includes an array of illegally and legally placed pieces of art within the public space. Think of stickers, posters, graffiti, and murals. We will also show you a couple of old wall advertisements. The city walk starts at 15:00 at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof and takes around 2 hours. Leeuwarden Beer Tour

Join our enthusiastic A Guide to Leeuwarden guide and get to know Leeuwarden by its beer. Where did the breweries used to be and where did they go? Recently, Leeuwarden has regained its very own beers in the forms of its Oldehove beer, De Kroon op Leeuwarden, and Grutte Pier. What happened during the Leeuwarden beer riot? The city walk starts at 15:00 at the Oldehove on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof. The walk takes around 1.5 hours and is in Dutch. We will also taste the local Grutte Pier, Cambier, and Oldehove beers during this beer tour. The Leeuwarden Beer Tour costs € 12.50 per person, the tasting of local beers included. Frisian Stories Tour

EVERY Friday at 15:00! Join the enthusiastic A Guide to Leeuwarden guide and let them take you on a tour through Friesland’s capital. This city walk through Leeuwarden will tell you the story of this unique region which its own language and culture. We teach you a little bit of Frisian, take a look at the Frisian Council Chamber, and we learn how Oranjekoek (“Orange cake”) is made. At the end of this walk, you will know how to be an ‘oprjochte Fries’. FREE TOUR: You decide what the tour is worth. There is no upfront payment, but you are welcome to give the guide a voluntary tip at the end. START: Every Friday at 15:00 at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof*. The walk takes approximately an hour and a half and is held in Dutch. There is another Free Tour on Saturdays at 12:00, for which an English language guide is present. *In case of events at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof, the tour will start across the square underneath the mural of Maria Louise. Mata Hari Tour

During this city walk you learn about Mata Hari’s story and you also discover Leeuwarden’s most beautiful places. We visit Mata Hari’s places of residence and where she went to school. We also go to sites that where important to her later in life, such as the theatre and prison. Start: The Mata Hari Tour starts at 14:00 o’clock at the entrance to the Frisian Museum at the Wilhelminaplein (also called Zaailand) every Saturday. The walk takes approximately an hour and a half and is only held in DUTCH. The Mata Hari Tour is a free tour.
